Using the same program plan and curriculum dedicated to your child's success for 38 years!
Wilderness Quest was founded in 1971, and historically has been dedicated to the success of teens, young adults, and families for over 38 years! The business, traditions and mission is being continued by a professional leadership team compiled of experienced Wilderness Quest Alumni, Staff, and Students who had life changing experiences through their time at Wilderness Quest. We are delivering the same curriculum that has been successful and has served over 10,000 students and their families. Wilderness Quest leverages the natural power of the wilderness in transforming young lives by combining time-honored principles and values with a highly structured educational curriculum. It recognizes the indispensable role of spirituality in the recovery process. The entire experience occurs in a pristine, natural environment.
Wilderness Quest understands the true nature of wilderness therapy. It is not a harsh methodology. Wilderness Quest does not employ punitive techniques. Therapists and staff build an atmosphere of unconditional love where positive relationships are emphasized and where the students thrive. Nature is supportive and safe. It prepares the soul, and aligns the heart and mind to internalize time-honored principles. Unsurpassed Success Through the combination of intensive wilderness therapy, experiential education, and a closely guided 12-step model, students find great success. Students are empowered to overcome substance use/abuse and behavioral and emotional issues as they learn how to implement new principles, which promote interpersonal skills, maturity, responsibility, accountability, and healthy ambition. Wilderness Quest provides unparalleled experience, education and training to guide family members along the road of healing, recovery and abundance.
For over 38 years, Wilderness Quest has been regarded as the premier wilderness program in the treatment of substance abuse. This present-day leadership team is committed to maintain this standard of excellence and lead the industry in working with substance abuse issues. It is extremely important, however, to acknowledge the co-occurring behavioral and emotional issues of our student population. (Co-occurring means that there is often more than one behavioral or emotional problem being manifest.)
The success of Wilderness Quest is the result of unparalleled intervention practices used in addressing the nature of behavioral and emotional conditions. Most of our students come to us with substance abuse issues, which we have had great success treating. However, we have also been extremely successful in treating emotional or behavioral conditions such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, oppositional defiant behavior, attachment, entitlement issues and self-defeating, reckless or self-destructive behavior. Wilderness Quest incorporates a unique and personally tailored treatment program for every student.
Family Program / Continuum of Care, Wilderness Quest believes that every struggling young person represents an entire family in need of counsel, support and tools for rebuilding relationships. Therefore, the Wilderness Quest experience is a whole family experience. Parents are an integral part of the student's work while in the field. With Wilderness Quest the student has been a signed their personal field Therapist, along with the family has a separate family Therapist assigned to them, so as a whole we work to strengthen the family unit. Through weekly updates and written communication between family and student, the rebuilding process begins from the first week. In addition, a required family workshop at the end of the program brings together parents, siblings and the student to begin the transition process to home or school. Finally, monthly follow-ups between the family, student and trained Wilderness Quest staff insure that the lessons learned in the field are incorporated in the home or new program.
Nationally Recognized Wilderness Quest is well-known industry experts with excellent reputations. Even Wilderness Quest competitors, other wilderness treatment programs, have united to honor the founder of Wilderness Quest as "Founding Fathers" of the wilderness youth services industry "who have made the most significant impact in the industry of working with troubled youth in a wilderness setting." Additionally, Dr. Keith Hooker is an industry leader in wilderness program safety and medical protocol. Keith is also a founding member of the wilderness youth services industry, and is the most experienced medical doctor in this field.
Accreditation - A critical indicator of the safety, effectiveness, and commitment to excellence of a wilderness program is its accreditation and licensure by authorized entities. This is an arduous and lengthy process. Wilderness Quest has been fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations since 1999. Wilderness Quest remains committed to maintaining this accreditation. Wilderness Quest provides a way back from substance use for young adults 18 - 28. One step at a time. Wilderness Quest is one of the only wilderness-based substance abuse treatment program operated primarily 12 recovery student alumni. Because of our background we understand the needs and emotional pain of recovering families. At Wilderness Quest we have the experience, education and training to help you, your family member and your family become united in traveling the road of recovery.
Through a combination of intensive wilderness living and strongly facilitated 12-step model self-discovery, students achieve changes in substance use/abuse, personal responsibility, accountability, maturity and behavior. As our client population has changed, Wilderness Quest adjusted to meet the new challenges. We modified our treatment program to address more complex diagnoses. In 1971, the THC content of Marijuana was about 5%; today it is about 35%. As a result, the clients rarely have a clear head after three weeks in the field like they did in 1971. To compensate for this, we have lengthened our program.
Thirty years ago, the average client began using drugs at ages 14 to 16. Now they are often 10 to 12 years old when they begin. A significant phenomenon with marijuana use is that emotional and social development stops with frequent use. Important emotional and social milestones are distorted and developmental stages are missed. We now have 16-year olds that are 11 years old on an emotional maturity level. Sexual activity also begins much younger than it did in the past, which also has a negative impact on social skill development and the ability to interact and relate with the opposite sex.
Violence appears to be more acceptable, especially with females. Males also appear more accepting of violence, with no understanding of the permanent damage and ripple effect it causes. A higher percentage of families are blended. Both parents, and often all four parents, work out of the home. Children have a stronger sense of entitlement, and believe that they shouldn't be in the wilderness receiving therapy, if they don't want to.
